Humans often put animals in awkward positions to which we'd never
subject ourselves. We cage birds, leash dogs, force lions to jump through
flaming hoops. Carousel women, dressed in riding tack, impaled by poles,
leaping gracefully, seemed an elegant way to turn the tables....
